The word Samul Nori refers to a type of Korean traditional music which uses four percussion instruments: small and large gongs, hourglass-shaped drums and drums. These instruments are used in all Korean music, but in particular for performances which, in an agricultural society, were given at celebrations.
Samul Nori is also the name of the group led by Kim Duk-soo, whose music, in his own words, comes from his spirit and from his ancestors and brings together every kind of Korean traditional music.
Samul Nori’s most recent performances in France were recorded in Ariane Mnouchkine’s legendary Théâtre du Soleil just outside Paris. They involve incredible feats of drumming, but also include song, dance and intricately choreographed swirling ribbons on the drummers’ hats – a visual and aural feast and a wonderful theatrical evening.
The television programme combines the performance itself with extracts from a masterclass given to members of the Théâtre du Soleil company by Kim Duk-soo, in which he explains the music and sets it in context.
